Explain to the children that now that they know what the definition of symmetry is, they are going to look for symmetry all around.Step 3: Engage children in lesson activities. Again, point to the shapes on the easel paper to emphasize this definition.Say: “Symmetry is when you draw an invisible line through the middle of a shape and both sides match.”.Ask the same questions and model the activities with the shapes. Repeat the same activity with the other shapes.When the child is finished, ask the child: “How did you know what to draw? Does this side of the heart help you draw the other side of the heart?” You are asking questions that will help the children formulate the definition of symmetry.Ask: “Can someone draw the other half of this heart?” Pick a volunteer to come up to the easel and draw in the rest of the heart. Paste half of the heart onto your easel paper.Ask: “Do you know what the other half of this heart looks like?”.Ask: “What do you now notice about this heart?” (It’s half of a heart.) Take away one half of the heart and hold up the other half. Say: “I’ve taken this shape of a heart and folded it down the middle.” Ask: “When I open up the shape, what do you notice?” (You folded the shape in half.).Ask the children: “What do you notice about what I have done to the shape?”.Fold a shape in half, unfold it and draw a line on the fold to emphasize it or cut the shape in half. Have the children gather on the rug and, using the cutout shapes, begin to fold the shapes symmetrically in half. Elicit a definition of symmetry from the children.Just be there to answer any questions and watch them create a masterpiece right before your eyes. This art activity is great for all ages! As long as you’re there for supervision, let them have fun painting. This is such a simple art activity that can have a different look every single time. Open it up to see a really cool and unique design! Then fold it over and have your child move the paint from over the paper.
One other idea that we did was take and squeeze three drops of paint directly in the middle of your paper fold. There are a lot of ways to be creative with this! Have fun brainstorming together on other ways that you can make symmety in art. You can even branch out and try other methods of painting, too. See how it looks the same while only having to do half the work? They’re going to love that they created one side and made it look the exact same on the other! That is called symmetry! Just have your child paint half the butterfly, then fold over to create the same look on the other half. You can easily do the same thing with the butterfly template as well. Once they’re done, fold over the page and press the design on to the other half. Let your child paint a shape or picture on half of the page. (Make certain to show them where the fold line is so they don’t go over.) Then, ask your child to paint only on one side of the paper. Start by taking the paper and folding it in half.
