He spoke Cherokee until he was about 13 years old, but in 1972 he stated "since that time I've had nobody to speak it with, so I’ve lost it." Strange was born in Weed, New Mexico Territory, of Irish and Cherokee ancestry. He played Sam Noonan, the bartender on CBS's Gunsmoke television series, and was Frankenstein's monster in three Universal films during the 1940s.
